Volunteers Honor MLK

at West Tuality Habitat

at Special Event.

After weather postponed its original January event, West Tuality Habitat was able to host volunteers on Monday, February 19 to teach participants how to use basic construction tools, learn about Habitat’s upcoming home-building activities in Western Washington County, apply new skills to constructing planter boxes that will be sold in the Forest Grove ReStore, and to talk about how Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.’s legacy of social justice and equity and how Habitat for Humanity strives to work towards his vision of the “Beloved Community.”

The Martin Luther King, Jr., National Holiday is usually held on the third Monday of each January. It is a National Day of Service to encourage all Americans to volunteer to improve their communities.

At the West Tuality Habitat for Humanity event:

  • Core volunteers who have helped Habitat build homes in Forest Grove over the years, along with the West Tuality Habitat’s construction manager, helped participants learn to use various power tools that are regularly used in home building and home repairs. Volunteers then applied these skills to make Spring planter box kits that the ReStore will sell. Sales will help fund the building of new homes and repairing of homes for vulnerable home owners in our local community.

  • Volunteers also learned about the King’s Center’s connections to Habitat for Humanity, and Habitat’s commitment to equity and social justice through its advocacy for access to decent, affordable housing.

  • Volunteers were briefed about the variety of ways they can volunteer with West Tuality Habitat throughout 2024 in our home construction, critical home repairs, neighborhood cleanups, events and program delivery.

Volunteers were kept dry and out of the winds of the rainy day in the new building that has been constructed recently by Habitat volunteers behind the Forest Grove ReStore. This special work space will allow volunteers to do prefabrication work away from the elements, work that can then be transported and installed in Habitat homes.
